Ocean Bound – The Kobenhavn

£ 1650

Oil on canvas 30” x 20”

The five-masted barque Kobenhavn being towed out of the River Mersey. Built in 1921 by Ramage and Ferguson of Leith, Scotland. At 430 ft overall and 3965 tons gross, she was the largest sailing ship ever built in the British Isles and, at the time of her launch, the largest in the world.

She was a training vessel owned by the East Asiatic Company of Denmark. Unlike modern training ships she actually carried cargo, including timber, grain, and cotton on voyages to Australia and the Far East.

She sailed from Buenos Aires on 14 December 1928 bound for Melbourne. She was never seen gain and, after many searches, was declared lost with all hands, a crew of 15 officers and 45 cadets.

Many theories abound as to her fate, several made into YouTube videos, but none are at all conclusive.
