For All The Tea in China

£ 1875

Oil on canvas 30” x 20”

This painting depicts the famous rivalry between the ships Thermopylae, launched in 1867, and Cutty Sark, launched in 1869. It shows them racing down the South China Sea, fully laden with tea for England in 1872. During the voyge, the Cutty Sark lost her rudder in the Indian Ocean. Amazingly, she managed to rig a jury rudder while at sea. Although this meant Thermopylae won the race, the Cutty Sark returned to England as a heroine due to her captain’s extraordinary feat of seamanship.
