Launched in 1658 as the second rate ship Richard, she was uprated to First Rate in 1660 following the Restoration. In both the Second Dutch War and the Battle of Lowestoft she served as the flagship for Prince Rupert. She fought in the Four Day’s Battle, June 1-4, 1666, and the St James’s Day Fight, July 25 1666.

She met her fate on the Medway in 1667 when she sunk deliberately to prevent capture during the Dutch raid. Her upper works were subsequently burned by Dutch fireships.
