Robert Jepson is an English artist living in the Isle of Man, painting primarily in oil or acrylic on canvas. After school, Robert joined the Royal Navy and committed to a 16 year career. But coming from a creative family, his father and uncle were artists and his grandfather was a professional musician, art was always his ultimate destiny. A spell of 4 years painting professionally after leaving the Navy was suspended for a considerable time due to life circumstances and he ended up once again in corporate employment. He realised, not before time, that life is too short to withhold ones dreams, the pull of his creative side became too much to ignore and so he reignited his art career.
My heart has always belonged to the sea. It has shaped my life, my memories, and above all, my art. In my early years I followed in my father’s footsteps, painting historic marine scenes. Though I still paint occasionally in that genre, over time, that narrative focus gave way to a deeper desire – to capture the pure majesty, movement, and power of the sea itself.
I have lived by or upon the ocean since I was seven. For the past twenty-five years I’ve owned my own yacht and spend a couple of months each year sailing in the Scottish Hebrides. I’ve faced seas that would terrify a newcomer, anchored in remote bays at sunset, and crossed calm waters that feel almost otherworldly. These experiences have given me an intimate respect for the sea in all her beauty, unpredictability, power and ferocity.
To me, the sea is an alluring and unforgiving mistress — magnificent, fickle, and at times dangerous. I believe danger only appears when we forget it’s there, and I approach both sailing and painting with humility and awareness.
I work across realism, abstraction, and sometimes surrealism. When I begin a painting, I rarely know exactly how it will develop. I may start from being present in nature, from memory, or reference material, but those are only guides. As the work evolves, I let intuition and the emotional force of the subject take over, seeking a spiritual connection with the vastness of the ocean.
My desire is that collectors and viewers feel that connection too. Perhaps the work will stir a memory, spark a sense of awe, or invite quiet reflection — especially in the more abstract pieces, which open space for personal interpretation.
With a variety of sizes, colour palettes, and approaches ranging from realism to abstraction, my paintings are created to live comfortably in homes, offices, and corporate spaces — wherever someone wishes to bring a sense of the sea’s presence into their world and experience it’s timeless presence in their own way.
